And so The Layereds(since all 3 of us have recently, though not on purpose to match, adopted layered hairstyles) went for a 3-D movie, A Christmas Carol, followed by dinner at Chili’s and drinks at G Hotel.

A Christmas Carol, IMO, is simply a nice tribute to Charles Dickens’s novel. I don’t think he’d have disapproved. This is my first 3-D full length movie experience. It’s good to enjoy the snow without getting cold

Chili’s was having really good business as usual. I took the New York  Strip Steak, medium well. Juicy. =] I think I’ve been a beef girl since a few months back. Alice’s appetizer was delish, and so was Pavin’s order. And the sauce that came with our bottomless Tostada chips was yummylicious. Next time I’m there, I’ll try their dessert. I bet they’re all great, too.

Our final destination was G Hotel. We were joined by Sarah and a friend, and we headed to G-Spot for the band performance. The singer was doing good, but they were playing so loudly, I couldn’t even hear myself talk. So after a drink, we decided to go to the Lounge, where it was quieter.

My books from UOL have just arrived yesterday. Won’t be getting them till the end of the month, though. Yikes.

Contemplating purchasing a Law Student/Law School shirt. That would be cool. Meanwhile, I’ve been tied down with LOST work. I can’t wait to get back to my studies. The library will be my daily haunt(except for Sundays) once this is over.

I bought a LOST T-shirt via Ebay! It’s being shipped from Canada as I write. RM107.14, but it’s worth every penny. It should be arriving sometime between the 18th and 28th of this month. I’ll post a photo of it here when it arrives =D

We were taking down notes when…

Mr.Sanjay, the lecturer: I saw one of my own students driving against the rules yesterday. I’m not good with names, but I can remember faces very well. Now, where is he… (scans the class) Ha! There you are!

(Addresses a boy, who in turn, has a ‘wth?’ look on his face. The whole class looks at said boy. Mr. Sanjay continues.)

Mr.Sanjay: Were you not in Little India yesterday during lunchtime?

(The boy nods mutely.)

Mr.Sanjay: Did you not notice a black car trying to park? It had put out the signal on the right, and was reversing to get in, but you blocked its way, and instead, parked your own car where that black car was trying to park?

(The boy doesn’t say anything.)

Mr.Sanjay: Well, your lecturer was in that black car.

(The whole class laughs.)

Mr.Sanjay: There I was, abiding by the rules, putting out the signal and everything, and you came and stole my space. And then there I was, shouting in the car, and I looked at you, and then I went, “Oh my god, that’s my own student.”

(The whole class laughs again.)

Boy: (slightly flustered) I’ll let you park next time, OK?

Mr.Sanjay: How could you drive against the rules? And by the way, did you also notice that the parking space I was trying to park in was for motorcycles only?

There’s so much I have to do. I gotta re-download the auditions, the soundtracks, and most importantly, the episodes themselves. I can’t believe I went this long without my doses of LOST! Going without it is only half living. I’d love to have some LOST merchandise too. I’d kill for them. But I’ll have to put those thoughts away for now, ’cause it’s way past my bedtime.

Well, I did offer to work in my mum’s office, but she turned me down. So she can’t blame me when she sees me doing whatever I’ve been planning on doing, which is pretty much getting an Extra Large slice of Paradise.

Okay, so she won’t be witnessing me having all that fun either, ’cause I’ll be at my grandparents’.
At my grandparents’, there’s the three dogs(especially my honey-hued Brownie), proper meals(with more veggie than you can take!), Internet connection(when granpa’s off to work, heh heh) and that peaceful, quiet ambiance between the afternoons and the evenings which I’ve never found anywhere else. It happens only when you watch from the window by my bed, the tall, willowy plants growing wild in the plot of land next to ours gracefully bowing in unison as a gentle wind breezes by, when you can see almost no one out and about, when you’re attuned to Nature and so can hear every friendly chirp the birds make, as though they, too, don’t want to spoil the ambiance by instigating a rowdy fight, and when there’s a very minimal amount of noise, and even then, any noise made at that period, like the wooden clunking of a chopping board on a sink, simply adds to the peacefulness. Those are the most peaceful moments I’ve ever had

It’s times like this when I’m reminded fondly of Alice In Wonderland, tucked away in the small cupboard just a few paces away.

But on the downside, I won’t get to be with Sue Lynn. I think I should alternate between the two houses. No proper meals in the afternoon and certainly no good ambiance at my mum’s, but that’s where my little sister is. Can’t do without her, not when I’ll be in Ipoh for a long while, and free, too. I’ll have to figure something out. We really should make another trip to the arcade centre, to shoot as many hoops as she likes, and go watch a movie. I hate missing out on my sister’s life
I’m not even sure what’s her favourite food. Raw salmon, isn’t it?

On a happier note, I’ll be seeing Ghashwin this week! Our outing is really important to me, ’cause our outings together are rare now. She’s always had to cancel. I really hope we don’t have to cancel it this time. It’s practically the highlight of my stay in Ipoh. I suppose she’d want a slice of Secret Recipe’s Chocolate Indulgence as her belated birthday present
Oh, and she’s planning to take me to that bakery in Silibin she’s been gushing about, to get a taste of their smashing chocolate cake. I’m good to go!
I wish she could stay longer. But I’ll take what I can get.

It’s past 3.30 a.m and I’ll be off to sleep soon. Then I’ll wake up later in the day, have my lunch, sweep, mop and wipe up the place, pack up the last of my things and take my shower. Then granddad will turn up with the driver and I’ll hand over my keys to Oxford House and we’ll be off. And none of my belongings will get stolen this time.
Once bitten, twice shy. I’m determined to see to that.

Found another gem the other day
This one’s called ‘Ashes And Wine’ by a lyrically creative singer who goes by the stage name of ‘A Fine Frenzy’. She had me by the second line of the song. You’ll see what I mean =)

Her voice fluctuates beautifully from husky to melodiously sweet throughout the song, and the lyrics have a realistic and reasonable opinion to them. All are perfectly weaved together.
The video here is a great combo of ‘Ashes And Wine’ + ‘Imagine Me And You’, a romance comedy movie. (Boy, is Lena Headey hot in here) Kudos to the person who made this video for piecing everything together really well!

I don’t really have anything of substance to announce other than supporting Dr.M’s view towards the new teaching system, but as it’s a whole month since I’ve last updated, I am obliged to face my own version of the idiot box(that is, my laptop), and type away on what’s been going on with me for you guys to see. I guess I’ll just rhapsodise over this brilliant diet I’ve devised myself.

Yep, you read it here first: Since I’ve now stopped sprouting upwards, I’ve got to stop trying to, and just settle for this ‘almost-as-tall-as-my-elder-brother-but-sadly-enough-not-quite-there-only-shorter-by-a-mere-1.5cms’ achievement. So, during the second or third week of June, I finally dropped my high protein and high calcium diet, and opted for a fantastic one instead. I say fantastic because I get to eat whatever I want to eat, and still lose weight. I’ve been consuming burgers and cheese and cakes and all manner of gastronomic delights, and shedding weight as I go. No drastic changes, of course, but there have been changes   I need a belt to go with my pair of green trousers now, and I never knew my arms could shrink. And, get this: (trying to relate this in as discreet and refined a manner as I possibly can) my upper feminine assets are thankfully still retaining their status as, well, upper feminine assets.

But on the negative side, my stomach capacity has shrunk, so I’m less of an asset and more of a liability when it comes to ‘all you can eat’ buffets now! (chuckles)

You guys must be wondering how I managed to pull it off. It’s pain free, and there’s only one rule to it: Just don’t eat breakfast.

I take whatever I want, be it a pint of Baskin Robbins or Haagen Dazs ice cream(which I might be having for lunch tomorrow as a reward if I cover all the Management Principles topics coming out in my mid term test by tonight), as long as the food doesn’t exceed the amount I always have every meal. This is why I don’t starve. I still eat my veggies and fruits, and a cuppa of green tea a day to help flush away the toxins in my body(after effects of my slight meaterian tendencies, as well as my penchant for fried, fatty and processed food).

If I don’t lose any more weight than I already have, it’s O.K, since I think I already have a reasonably healthy body size for my height and body type. I admit it’s not the perfect diet, but at least it’s reasonably well balanced, aye? Sure, it would be better if I drink more green tea and get round to being physically active a couple of times a week. I might look into the green tea thing, but I’m still waiting for the long wished for personal treadmill to materialise out of a blessing(disguised as a HUGE wad of ringgit notes). And, at any rate, I’m still faring a whole lot better than those who only eat once a day and the anorexics and the bulimics and the bulimarexics and the yo-yo dieters and the liposuction addicts. Don’tcha think so?

147 out of 152/153 of my favourite songs recovered! Prayfully, I’ll remember the outstanding 5 or 6 too. Just got a new laptop, an HP Compaq Presario CQ40(I know my brother’s seething with jealousy  as he reads this). But notice no smiley faces here. That’s cos’ I don’t deserve this new laptop. I won’t be expounding on my stupidity here as you guys know full well about it already.

I’m all settled in. It’s sort of a no man’s land, but you won’t notice it if you’re studying here, as its immediate surroundings are city-like. It’s all good here. I have a spacious bedroom that’s ant-free, nowhere near a busy road, doesn’t get hit by unwelcome rays of sunlight in the evening, and has a private bathroom attached. And what with the Internet access, transportation services, laundry services, cleaning services, plenty of food deliveries to choose from, better security, and housemates who don’t cause any trouble, I have everything to make my three year stay here really cosy All I have to do is study and fit in.

Can’t use uTorrent, though, and the lecturers and tutors are plain inadequate. They’re barely fit to teach. They’re monotonous, don’t hold the students’ attention, and don’t even bother chastising the students when there’s a lot of chatter going on during class. You can really see the difference in the quality between the lecturers in Kemayan ATC Penang, and the ones over here. One replacement lecturer galloped through the session, curtailing the lecture’s duration from 2 hours to a mere 45 minutes, and bid adieu to us without so much as a perfunctory “Are there any questons?”.

I wonder now how UTAR managed to churn out all those excellent graduates. Hopefully, not all of my lecturers and tutors turn out the same. I’ve yet to see a few of them in action.

I’ve started dating Chinese For Dummies again. I’ll keep you guys updated on my progress. I’m really determined to make this work! And I’m positive it’ll happen, too. Then I can really communicate freely with everyone here. =D

So, how about you guys? What have you been doing after our finals? I’ll be waiting for your replies

I’m excited and apprehensive at the same time in going to UTAR, Kampar. Here’s why:

Pros:

* It’s the perfect place to learn and practise Mandarin.

* I get my own bathroom. And, a bigger room than my present one.

* UTAR’s gigantic. Same goes for its number of students, so I can disappear in the crowd oh so easily. I can just keep my head down, do my work, and not be noticed. Thank God.

* My hostel in Kampar, unlike my present one, probably does not flood whenever there’s very heavy rain, so there’s no need to wade through those disgusting waters.

* My hostel in Kampar would also probably not be home to a great number of insects, so I wouldn’t need to suffer insect bites, like what I’m doing now, and end up scratching those bites till they hurt.

* I get to start over with a clean slate when it comes to my studies. I didn’t give my best in A-Levels, maybe because it wasn’t my choice to do the A-Levels. This time around, it was my decision to study Financial Economics. That’s why I’m motivated.

Cons:

* No Pavin.

* No Alice.

* No Borders bookstore.

* The gym is further away, and there are probably many people using it in UTAR.

* No food in Kampar. That’s what you realise when you’ve stayed in Penang.  Know how to spell Penang? Like this: F-o-o-d.

* No shopping malls. I’m not a mall rat, I can actually go for a month without going to the mall more than once, but no malls at all? Can’t handle it. And who would still like to go to plain and boring Kinta City and Ipoh Parade after they’re used to Gurney and Queensbay?

* There’s monotony when it comes to race. In this case, the majority are Chinese. I really don’t like to see a whole sea of just one type of  race anywhere. Which is why China gave me the shudders whenever I went there on holiday. Like, you’re all the same. Scary.

* No Karmen, Karyn and Kelvin. I am very reluctant to leave them!!! Those kids are pretty decent and fun. I won’t forget our sleepovers. And Karyn’s wicked laugh. And the fact that Karmen and Karyn are the cousins I’m closest to. And that Karmen and I have a good connection. And that Kelvin is such a sweet little boy. To think that I’ll only get to see them about a couple of times a year from now on. Life’s not fair.

Yeah, that about sums things up.

It’s that time of your life again when you have to be cruelly separated from people dear to you.

But before that, you gather for one last time   

So, Bubbles, Blossom and I went to RedBox, slightly trussed up. They even had war paint makeup on, but I wouldn’t touch those things if I could help it. (And my uncle calls me a ‘tai siew che’. Hah!)

We had a list of songs we were going to sing, and each of us had to make a speech. Bubbles’s idea.

Fun, as usual. Bubbles swore in the future, she’d make us her bridesmaids, or something equally important. But let’s assume that there can only be one bridesmaid, so we can’t both be the bridesmaid.

Well, you know, I can be the bridesmaid, because Blossom, with her stature and her cute little girl voice, can pass off as the flower girl. Haha!

 Blossom moved out the next day, and I’ll be followin suit this tenth of June.

But we had really connected, and all three of us will remain good friends for life, that’s a sure thing :)

Last Sunday, I finally got to have a nice, decent conversation over the phone with my little sister, which hadn’t  happened in months. It’s pretty hard to come by, cos’ she’s always grumpy and reluctant to talk(or rather, to talk politely) whenever I give her a call.

She was unusually cheerful that day, though. Here’s part of our conversation:

Sue Lynn : What present did you buy for me yesterday?

Me : I’m not telling you.

Sue Lynn : Aww, please, can you give me a clue? Is it a bag?

Me : No, you have TOO MANY bags already.

Sue Lynn : Yerr… I want a bag. I saw this bag, very nice ah, but Mummy won’t buy for me!

Me : Must be expensive then.

Sue Lynn : A hundred something.

Me : Whoa. Yeah, that IS expensive. Hey, do you know what’s on the ninth of May?

Sue Lynn : Yeah. The Sultan’s (of Perak) birthday.

Me : It’s someone else’s birthday on that day too.

Sue Lynn : Who?

Me : Hey, you’re TEN this year, you should remember it by now. Sue Lynn, when is my birthday?

Sue Lynn : The second of November.

Me : And when is Ko Ko’s (our big brother) birthday?

Sue Lynn : Over already.

Me : !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You silly girl, it’s on the ninth of May lah! I got him a present already. What are you gonna get him?

Sue Lynn : I don’t know. A Baby Alive?

Me : (chokes)

Sue Lynn : (changes mind) No, a baby bottle. To put milk in.

Me :  WHY. WHY.

Sue Lynn : Because he acts like a baby.

Me : (silence)

         (breaks silence) No, he doesn’t.

( Moo Moo is my sister’s No.1 favourite toy, a baby cow she’s mothering over: feeding, changing its diapers, etc. The last time she came up to Penang, she brought Moo Moo along and showed it to one of our little cousins, saying, “This is Moo Moo. I love my Moo Moo” , and kissed and squeezed it. And our little cousin, who’s a whole year younger  than my sis, gave her this look and said, “You are such a baby.” )

So now I know what it feels like to suffer from a disorder.

A speech disorder and a communication disorder, to be more specific.

CLUTTERING, to be exact. (Also called tachyphemia)

FACT No.1 : Cluttering is a fluency disorder characterized by the frequent placement of pauses.

FACT No.2 : Those with cluttering may experience a short attention span, poor concentration, and poorly organized thinking. 

FACT No.3 :Cluttered speech is exhibited by normal speakers, and is often referred to as stuttering–this is especially true when the speaker is nervous.

FACT No.4 : A clutterer has no problem putting thoughts into words, but those thoughts become disorganized during speaking.

FACT No.5 : Clutterers are most clear at the start of utterances, but their speaking rate increases and intelligibility decreases towards the end of utterances.

FACT No.6 : Cluttering is also characterized by monotone speech that starts loud and trails off into a murmur.

There Will Be Blood was nominated for 8 Oscars, won 2, and had another 48 wins and 44 nominations under its belt.

There will be blood. There will be oil. There will be milkshakes and a straw long enough to reach across a room!!

Clearly, this is something to watch

Meet Daniel Plainview. He’s a successful oilman,greedy and filled with an inexplicable hate for human beings, save for his small family consisting him, an adopted son, H.W, and his alleged half-brother. His voice is deceptive; it matches neither his looks nor his evil. This, coupled with his oratory skills, has him come across as a very convincing speech maker when he wants to be.

When he receives a tip-off that there’s a little town where an ocean of oil is oozing out of the ground, he goes there and makes his lucky strike. But then, conflict escalates. Among other things, he’s in loggerheads with Eli Sunday, a charismatic preacher and self-proclaimed faith healer,and his son, H.W,  becomes bitter after he turned deaf in an accident, causing Daniel to send him away, which leaves in his wake a lifelong hatred of his father.

This movie’s a bit slow, but it’s worth the watch. I’m still wondering what was its purpose, as there seems to be no moral to this story, cause Daniel just gets hilarious and deliciously wickeder as he turns old, that’s all. And the last murder? I don’t think I’ve ever watched murder carried off in such a style as this before, him treating the victim like a pestilential human well worth squashing dead. Enjoyed it even, twitching around like a great spider with the victim trapped in his awful web of a home bowling alley(Daniel’s super rich). Really, the ending is awesome! Oh, and pay attention to the music as well. It’s scary at the beginning, whimsical in the middle and hilarious at the end!

When I first heard the movie  title, I thought, this sounds cool. When I saw the trailer, I pretty much liked it. Alan Johnson ( played by Don Cheadle, a good thing, since he starred in many of my favourite movies), is a dentist and family man who lives a near perfect life. The problem is, as a dutiful husband, he plays jigsaw puzzles and goes for photography lessons with his wife when what he really wants to do are more manly things,like playing poker, and his wife doesn’t understand that. As a result, he feels smothered and needs his own space to breathe. One day, he bumps into his old college roommate, Charlie Fineman(Adam Sandler), who, contrary to his name, isn’t fine at all, not since he lost his wife, 3 daughters and dog to the 9/11 attacks when the plane they were on was hijacked.

Charlie seems not to recognise him, and upon rekindling their friendship, Alan learns that Charlie is now living in isolation, constantly listening to music, playing video games, watching movies, and banging on his drums. He does not want any friends, apart from Alan. The reason? As Charlie’s old friend puts it:

Sugarman: He likes you Alan, you know why? Because you know nothing about his family.

Alan tries to help him, but Charlie doesn’t want to be helped. Try to do that, and he’ll get mad, shouting for all and sundry to hear and destroying things within his reach. Most reluctantly, he goes to see soft spoken psychologist Angela Oakhurst (Liv Tyler), who is also counselling Donna Remar, a patient of Alan’s who’s been giving him trouble at work. One day, Charlie finally opens up to Alan, but now that he’s brought those memories back, he suffers more and tries to get himself killed by terrorising the streets with a gun in hand.

His attempt fails and he is briefly detained in a mental hospital. It is now up to his parents-in-law to decide whether to commit him permanently or let him find his own way.

I didn’t think Adam Sandler’s performance when his character opened up to Alan all that touching. It is only the incident in the courtroom scene when you get to see the extent of how that tragedy has really affected Charlie. Don Cheadle, meanwhile, does good in this movie. All in all, Reign Over Me is as good a watch as its trailer suggests.

My Results

Extraversion

Some people like lots of stimulation; they want people around them, activity and excitement, whilst others prefer to be able to focus on things in a calm and quiet environment. The funniest thing just happened! I was walking back with Pavin, my college bestie, to our hostel after dinner, and there was a stray dog near our hostel compound. Let me tell you first off that Pavin’s scared of dogs; strays, miniatures, et al. So then she starts freaking out, obviously, placing a wide berth between herself and the dog, saying “Shoo!”, and asking me for help, when actually, I’m the potential target, cause I was the one holding a takeaway.

The dog probably wouldn’t have followed us at all if she’d just ignored it, but follow us it did, and as docile as anything too. But I got nervous myself, as I had no idea what was on its mind. I mean, a dog you’ve never been introduced to wouldn’t follow you around just to escort you back to your house like you’re both at the end of a date now, would it?

Pavin made for the doorway and was calling for me to hurry up, but I didn’t want to make any sudden movements,  for obvious reasons.  So then she got to it first, and (still in freaking out mode) slid the main door closed, and then squealed for me to get in. I was in a state of nervous giggling by then. “How,” I said between all that giggling, “am I supposed to come in when you’ve locked me out?” “Distract it!” she said, and disappeared for the briefest moment, returned, slid the door open to throw something at the dog, and out came…  a leaf.

The hilarity of that moment! A leaf, I ask you. I got in and she banged the door shut behind me. I was about to question her absence of mind in throwing a leaf, and nothing but a leaf, at a dog when she looked up at the first floor landing and screamed. I turned round. We weren’t alone.

When she’d shut that grill door behind us 2 seconds ago, we both thought we were safe. Until we saw yet another stray dog outside our hostel door,and that’s when we realised we were caught in between dog 1 and dog 2! I laughed even harder. This situation was getting ‘better and better’! I think Pavin screamed again, cause I remembered telling her to calm down and not get into a panic so that we’d be able to figure out a way to get out of this dilemma. Then Soo Sean came out to our hostel door to see what all the fuss was about and told us that the dog was harmless. Anyway, Pavin slid the door open the grill door and dog no.2 got out, obediently.

The door’s slid shut again and we laughed all the way up the stairs, but no, it wasn’t over. On the landing in between our floor and the next, there’s a stray no.3! Seeing Pavin freak out again and turning the key to our hostel door in great panic was really entertaining,honestly. She cracked me up again when, turning the handle forcefully for a few times in quick succession, the door remained locked. Finally, she had the presence of mind to turn the key the other way, and we were in at last, unscathed.

It took us some time to leave off laughing after that! Then I had to go out once more to slide open the main door again when we realised we’d shut dog no.3  in the building & it wouldn’t be able to go out to do its business if nature called. Really, it’s worth having dramatic Pavin around
